Overview

I was Head Publicity Designer for Scotch'n'Soda Theatre's 2017 production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Tom Stoppard's three-act tragicomedy based on two minor characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet. As Publicity Designer, I created and distributed 8.5x11" teaser posters, 11x17" main posters, t-shirts, programs, tickets, and social media content.

Vision

The directors’ vision for the show focused on themes of surrealism and unreality; at the same time, the play's heavy references to Shakespeare called on themes of classical theatre. To visually marry these concepts, I used collage as a medium to evoke a traditional, vintage, “Shakespearean” vibe that was at the same time abstract, modern, and light-hearted.

Process

Knowing collage was my medium, my process began by looking through physical documents – magazines, books, calendars – to find elements that aligned with the directors' and my own vision. Due to the themes and motifs of the show, I was particularly searching for elements involving animals, flowers, royalty, the sea, and/or death.
